Description:
Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine, known as Emir Abdelkader or Abdelkader El Djezairi, was an Algerian emir, religious and military leader, born in 1808 and who died in 1883. At nearly twenty, he united the tribes to fight against France's conquest of Algeria in the mid-19th century. After surrendering, he was imprisoned in France before going into exile in Syria. There, he pursued poetry and developed strong ties with Paris. He received honors from the French government for intervening to protect persecuted Christians in Syria, forcefully defending Christian families who sought refuge in Algeria from certain death.
