Description:
Edmond Dantès, a young sailor from Marseille, is imprisoned in the Chateau d'If, a state prison. He insists on his innocence, but the guards mock and torment him before isolating him. Just hours earlier, Dantès had returned to Marseille from a voyage and was joyfully reunited with his fiancée, Mercedes. Her father, Pierre Morrel, had promoted Dantès to captain as a wedding gift. However, soldiers interrupted their celebration to arrest him. Dantès is certain he has committed no crime and promises Mercedes he will return quickly. The story is now being recounted by a group of high school students preparing for a play adaptation of "The Count of Monte Cristo." As they debate how to portray the story, they summarize its key events.
