Description:
April 1940. Sixteen-year-old Manolo and his younger brother Jesus are sent by their Army lieutenant brother Pepe to a sanatorium for children with tuberculosis on the Portuguese border. At the sanatorium, Manolo finds himself the oldest boy among patients much younger than him, with only the handyman Emilio as another adult around besides his wife Rafaela, the cook. He encounters Irene, a falangist who manages the sanatorium, and Miss Transito, a stern schoolteacher. Manolo has his first sexual experience with his nurse Vicenta. When she departs, Maria Jesus from the village takes her place, and Manolo develops a deep love for her, forging a bond that will profoundly affect both of them.
