Description:
Musamoni Panigrahi (1920s–2017), known as “Nani Ma” to those around her, is featured in this film, speaking in the Baleswari dialect of Odia. The story centers on the folklore and folk songs she shares. Born in rural Odisha in the 1920s, before India's independence, Nani Ma had limited formal education. The film explores an alternate history shaped by colonization, patriarchal traditions, and the devastating effects of famine (including the 1866 Orissa famine, which killed millions) that led to the marginalization of oral traditions in favor of written language. Academics Damayanti Beshra, Panchanan Mohanty, and Laxmikanta Tripathy appear to offer insights into patriarchy, oral history, and the region's diverse languages.
