A decade-long drought threatens local ranches. The search for Bert Neville strains Rail and Mitra's relationship, leading to their breakup and Rail's solitary journey. Travis, Ziggy, and Karin hitchhike into the high country and become lost in a burned forest. Taylor travels with Ukrainian gallery owners seeking the quintessential Western artist. Dane introduces Rail to his mother, Violet, a full-blood Cherokee who recounts the hardships of Indian boarding schools. Her ex-husband, Bedford, refuses to reveal his true name to Rail. Their daughter, April, runs a tribal blog focused on Native American issues. Dane and Rail encounter local militia. Developers propose a geothermal plant, dividing ranchers and residents with differing political views. Rail discovers an old map in a deserted ranch, and Mitra, having recovered, reunites with him.
