Description:
In Southern and Eastern Africa, "ritual reversals"—or acts of rebellion disguised as rituals—are practiced. During fertility ceremonies, such as rainmaking rituals, women perform acts of indecency while acting like men, all within secret performances for elders. We were invited to record a rainmaking ceremony with Chief Chassuka in Mozambique to document this fading tradition for future generations, a tradition likely disappearing because of the unique songs and dances involved.
