Description:
This film documents a five-year visual study of the traditional Semana Santa celebrations in a small Filipino town where woodcarving is the primary way of life. It explores how the Philippines, after colonization, interprets religious figures through rituals and art, focusing on the transformation of wood into sacred objects. The film coincides with the 500th anniversary of the Mahal na Señor Sepulcro, a sculpture believed to have arrived during Spanish colonial times. Simultaneously, local non-actors perform Senakulo, reenacting the Passion of Christ. As the community gathers each year to commemorate the event, the film follows local artisans as they laboriously carve a massive, 12-foot crucified Jesus from a single block of wood.
