Automata
6/10 by CinemaSerf May 3, 2026
Following a series of environmental catastrophes, mankind has been reduced to one single sity of 20 million souls living under an umbrella of artificial clouds that do what they can to provide rainwater. Determined to reclaim some of their lost territory, the ominous "ROC Corporation" creates it's latest robot - the "Pilgrim" to try to help humanity. It has two rules: it can't harm or allow a person to be harmed and it cannot harm or alter itself or another android. Pretty watertight security protocols, eh? Sort of like in "iRobot" (2004) eh? Anyway, when one of these mechanical critters is sh…

The House on Haunted Grounds
by Sierbahnn May 3, 2026
This is poorly shot and poorly edited. It is low budget and it shows. They have a decent enough camera set up but everything else is of a lower quality. It isn't engaging and it isn't very interesting. I would steer clear.…

Forty Guns
7/10 by CinemaSerf May 3, 2026
I don't think there was ever a woman as at home in a western at Barbara Stanwyck and even though I didn't love the direction of travel this one takes, she is still near the top of her game with this. Her "Jessica" runs a vast Arizona spread from the back of her brilliant white stallion with some help from a pliable sheriff and her own private army. Then marshall "Griff" (Barry Sullivan) arrives with his two brothers to impose some emblance of law and order on the place and to arrest her wayward younger brother. Initially, she is happy to see these interlopers dispensed with by said trigger hap…

Kraken
7/10 by Sierbahnn May 2, 2026
After Trollhunter (2010) and the later Troll-movies (2022,2025) it is well established that Norwegian filmmakers are confident and proficient monster-builders. So also with this movie, which is a cautionary tale about meddling with nature. The casting is solid, the character-work leaves the protagonists and antagonists with motivations and relationships you can relate to, which means that the tension has stakes. The direction is good and the effects are just lovely. There are a lot of physical props to compliment the grander cgi-pieces, and it all blends very well together. I enjoyed this a lo…

Canyon Passage
7/10 by Wuchak May 2, 2026
**_Dana Andrews, Susan Hayward, and Brian Donlevy in 1856 Oregon_** This captures the spirit of Ernest Haycox’s lyrical storytelling with developed characters and outstanding location shooting. Andrews stars as an ambitious businessman whose plans are interrupted by his compassion for afflicted hombres. Hayward is on hand as his potential romantic interest, along with Patricia Roc, while Donlevy plays an indebted gambler, also with eyes for Hayward. Several other characters are fleshed out, such as a burly ne’er-do-well (Ward Bond), a bemused minstrel (Hoagy Carmichael), a cynica…

Night Patrol
by RottenPop May 2, 2026
Here we have Night Patrol, the proto-Police Academy that is far more adult but also, like, actually funny. It’s witty, well-written, and the comedy treads into some interesting places, even though most of it goes way too far. To say that it pushes the envelope is an understatement. Director Jackie Kong is the creative mind behind oddities like The Being and Blood Diner, making her the perfect weirdo to bring this absurdist cop comedy to life. While the majority of the comedy is funny, those last few moments really harm the production. It’s a solid comedy that plays a little too hard and…

The Devil Wears Prada 2
8/10 by Brent Marchant May 2, 2026
When 20 years pass between a movie and its sequel, a lot of disappointment can result when the follow-up is at last released. Derivative, underdeveloped story threads and an overreliance on nostalgic strolls down memory lane often abound, leaving viewers suitably underwhelmed, especially loyal fans of the source material. However, every so often, audiences are the lucky beneficiaries of pleasant surprises, movies that live up to their billing and come close to matching the magic of their predecessors. Such is the case with director David Frankel’s long-awaited answer to the iconic 2006 comedy …

2073
by misubisu May 2, 2026
**Score: 6/10 — A Visceral, Uneven, and Deeply Frustrating Warning Shot** Asif Kapadia, the director behind masterful documentaries like *Amy* and *Senna*, takes a sharp left turn with *2073*. This is not a straightforward documentary. It's a hybrid—what Kapadia dubs "speculative non-fiction"—that intercuts a fictional dystopian narrative with real archival footage and interviews to argue that we are sleepwalking toward catastrophe . The ambition is admirable, the craft is often stunning, and Samantha Morton delivers a heartbreaking performance with almost no dialogue. Yet the fi…

To Philly with Love
5/10 by Hotchka May 1, 2026
The story for _To Philly with Love_, with its sort of mild _National Treasure_ historical scavenger hunt theme, really makes the search for the missing letters and all of the connections to Philadelphia and the historical context much more interesting than the actual romance, which really suffers from a lack of chemistry beyond the professional between the leads. The production team did a really nice job of seamlessly integrating scenes filmed in Philadelphia with scenes filmed in Ottawa, with the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and LOVE Park featured prominently. It’s refreshing that they did…

A Little Park Music
10/10 by Hotchka May 1, 2026
Hallmark has finally delivered something lovely, charming, amusing that embodies all the best of what Hallmark can deliver. _A Little Park Music_ begins with a wonderful screenplay by Rick Garman and Heather Taylor that really captures the essence of Hallmark’s Smalltown America without making it too precious, while at the same time showing us how important a sense of community can be. Prior to the appearances of the pianos, the people of Springville simply passed by or through the park, most never giving it a second thought which made the location for the fountain ideal. Something else for pe…
