Amityville: The Awakening
7/10 by Wuchak May 23, 2026
**_Forty years after the DeFeo murders, a mother & her kids move in_** It took 2½ years after principle shooting in Apr-May 2014 for this to finally be released in late Oct 2017. Poor test screenings concerning the climax led to reshoots of the ending in Feb 2016, which took so long because Cameron Monaghan (James) was hard to pin down. Also, R-rated material was edited out to secure a PG-13 rating. Forgetting all of that, is it any good? It worked for me because the focus is on the teenager, Belle, played by the striking Bella Thorne, and her adjusting to a new home and school (…

Amityville: A New Generation
6/10 by Wuchak May 22, 2026
**_The setting switches to the Arts District and an artifact from the Dutch Colonial house_** This was the seventh of eight “Amityville” movies released from 1979-1997. Only the first three were theatrically released. The fourth one was made-for-television and the next four went direct-to-video. What sets this installment apart is the milieu noted above. Like Tommy Lee Jones’ “Broken Vows” from six years earlier, the movie focuses on artists and their studios in the heart of the big city. The city is never specified, but it has to be West Chelsea on the West Side of Manhattan, al…

A Mysterious World
6/10 by CinemaSerf May 23, 2026
I'm afraid that I rather struggled to engage with this. It is all about the escapades of the startled "Boris" (Esteban Bigliardi) who has just been told by his long-term girlfriend "Ana" (Cecilia Rainero) that she wants a break. It's a bolt from the blue, and one that comes with some unwelcome side effects. He has to move out of their apartment and live from his suitcase in a hotel room. She isn't seeing anyone else, nor can she furnish him with any reason for her ennui with their relationship which makes matters even more frustrating for the now rudderless "Boris". Trying to get on with hi…

The Vast of Night
4/10 by Gordon May 23, 2026
So painfully boring. It took over 30 minutes to get to get to any kind of story, up until that point it was nothing but dialogue that didn't really set anything up. I got bored and lost all interest.…

Dig Two Graves
3/10 by Dr_Nostromo May 22, 2026
32/100 A girl makes a pact with 3 strangers to kill a boy in exchange for the return of her dead brother. There were some interesting aspects to this story but the film was far too slow, the characters far too lifeless, and the ending far too cryptic for me to care. -- DrNostromo.com…

Vulgar
4/10 by Dr_Nostromo May 22, 2026
37/100 Down on his financial luck, a party clown decides to expand his business to cover being a gag clown at bachelor's parties where things go very wrong. This is an ultra-low budget feature presumably made by a group of friends and whoever they could get ...and they did OK. There's plenty here to show their inexperience as filmmakers but, overall, the film is goofy, perverse, obnoxious, has some very difficult to watch scenes, and mildly entertaining with some occasional brilliantly funny dialogue. -- DrNostromo.com…

Summer Camp
3/10 by Dr_Nostromo May 22, 2026
27/100 Four American counselors are setting up a summer camp in Spain when they inexplicably become psychotic killers. (heavy sigh) Ok... The agent that inflicts them and how it works is very good and quite unique. That alone had a huge potential to make a great movie. However, once again, the filmmakers decided to make all the principals morons. By the time the first one was inflicted, I was so frustrated in their behavior, I didn't care what happened to them. And it never improved. What a waste of a good idea. -- DrNostromo.com…

Sunshine
7/10 by Dr_Nostromo May 22, 2026
67/100 The sun is dying and the Icarus II is sent with a massive bomb to kick it back on 7 years after an apparent failure of Icarus I to do the same. This sounds like one of those totally implausible scenarios used to create a spec fx heavy adventure without any real science to back it up. But this film took great care to make it scientifically plausible and the human drama was as fantastic as the story. This is really good, hardcore sci fi and my only gripe is much of the action was blurry and shaky and was making me nauseous. -- DrNostromo.com…

Major League II
6/10 by Dr_Nostromo May 22, 2026
62/100 I think this film got a bum rap, personally. Not as "laugh-out-loud" funny as the original but did anyone expect to be? You know, there are movies that are simply a real tough act to follow and we should keep that in mind going in. In this case, if you like the original, you'll probably like this one. Not as much but it's a worthy follow up good for a few laughs. -- DrNostromo.com…
