I don't get the praise, it's a bunch of jump scares with a bunch of plot holes, and a broken up story so you don't ask things like "Why didn't the police check the homes of the missing kids?"
Now, there was one decent scene with the female protagonist sleeping in a car, no spoilers, but the rest were just jump scares, nothing more.... seriously nothing more.
It's really a movie you need to think about here, in fact it's better if you don't, a tiny bit of thought will make the holes glaring.

Shot in 2001, this was based on Sebastian Faulks’ 1998 novel. Contrary to what some say, the titular character was not based on Nancy Wake's real-life exploits. The author has plainly stated this. Perhaps he was inspired a bit by the New Zealander's story to create the one he wanted to tell, but that's about it.

The combination of Lisbeth having to re-visit a previous nemesis and Millennium Magazine doing an expose on human trafficking results in a pair of murders with Lisbeth as the main suspect. "Total Recall" is an extraordinarily violent and gory extravaganza, but even though it is quite needlessly graphic in some places - Quaid's, Melina's, and Cohaagan's suffocation after they are exposed to the poisonious Martian atmosphere; the deaths of innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire during scenes of gunplay; the severing of limbs; the stabbings and impalings and so forth - the film is admittedly staged superbly and directed by Paul Verhoeven in an exciting way at all times and it is enjoyably well paced.
