"We Bury The Dead" is truly compelling for the first half of the film but then loses its momentum. As the film begins, it crosses a spectrum of emotions from chilling, horrific to ultimately tragic. What's really disturbing about this film is that it's wholly believable, too. It's so well done. We get scenes of apocalyptic destruction in Tasmania, Australia. We see people emotionally broken and seeking answers as a result of the death of loved ones. Many come to help in the massive cleanup operation in the hope they can say "goodbye". "Wake" ("Vaka") is one of those Scandinavian series you hope will go somewhere interesting but doesn't. The story revolves around an outbreak of a virulent contagion that, as it turns out, is the result of actions from a pharmaceutical company that ends up infecting the drinking water supply. People get red rings around the Isis and cannot sleep, leading to an often dramatic and horrible death. "The RIP" harks back to earlier 80's and 90's style cop crime thrillers but ultimately, feels more like a fascimile, than an original work, in its own right. To be fair, perhaps the biggest problem with this genre, in general, is its become its own cliche. Hard drinking, sweary, hairy, violent cop tough guy, sterotypes, who drive souped up cars and are smarter than first appearances, would suggest. The film’s slow burn wouldn’t feel so staggering if it built to something wholly worthwhile. The blood, hallucinations, and sea creature are all great, but they’re too fleeting to make a lasting impact. Iron Lung promises something grand and cosmic, but its climactic reveal is abrupt, with few scares and only a brief glimpse of the monster. 46/100 A down-on-his-luck guy buys a good luck doll which proceeds to ruin his life ...or does it? The gimmick of the film being presented in a 'found footage' format through the eyes of the doll was really cool but, like the old Twilight Zone, "Nick of Time", is the doll really causing all the chaos we're seeing or are we just witnessing this guy losing his mind. The most common thing that people who watched this movie describe it with the following two descriptions. The first one is that the story doesn't really 'get going' until it's about halfway through the run time. The second description is that this is a 'slow burn.' Hmm. Imagine being a 15 year old girl in 1980s Hollywood. You get a role in a children's movie. In this movie you are hyper-sexualized, show your panties, only wear revealing clothes, take off your top and stroke your nipples. Probably Epstein's favourite flick. It's a mess.
