Threads of a Revolution (2025)

In the late 1980s, artist Janet Biehl discovered her life's work editing "The Ecology of Freedom," a revolutionary book by philosopher Murray Bookchin. She didn't know then that his ideas would profoundly affect her and later inspire a major change in North-East Syria decades later. Now, over 40 years later, Janet travels from America to the Middle East. Drawn by curiosity and a strong connection to Bookchin’s beliefs, she sees firsthand how his theories have impacted the region. In Syria, recovering from ISIS, she finds that Bookchin's vision has fueled a women-led revolution, transforming society through local democracy. Janet documents the strength of these women as they put her late partner's political philosophy into practice. Her drawings tell their stories, giving voice to ordinary people fighting for self-rule. As Syria faces new challenges to this revolution, "Threads of a Revolution" explores the possibilities for those who want to build a new way of life.
