Description:
Harrison MacWhite, a brilliant scholar, wins a contentious Senate hearing and becomes the US ambassador to Sarkan, an Asian nation close to civil war. Despite his diplomatic expertise, MacWhite struggles to understand the nuances of Sarkan's political situation, viewing it through a simple US versus communism lens. His relationship with Deong, a local opposition leader, suffers when MacWhite misinterprets anti-American feelings as simple dislike for the United States, failing to recognize desires for independence and national pride. As tensions escalate, MacWhite’s unwillingness to adapt his methods endangers the fragile peace of Sarkan and puts those around him at risk. The film explores cultural understanding, the difficulties of international relations, and personal growth through the story of a man learning empathy and compromise during a time of great upheaval.
