"The Silk Road" is a documentary series that began with a collaborative broadcast on April 7, 1980, by Japan's NHK Tokushu and China's CCTV. It opens with a scene of a camel caravan at sunset, accompanied by music from Kitaro, establishing a timeless atmosphere and capturing the spirit of the ancient trade routes.
The series begins in Chang'an (Xi'an), the eastern starting point of the Silk Road, and follows the NHK crew westward through the Pamir Heights towards the Pakistan border. The project involved 450,000 feet of film, edited into twelve monthly broadcasts, each exploring a different aspect of the historical routes.
Due to popular interest, further series were produced over a decade, expanding the documentary's scope from China to Rome. The entire undertaking took seventeen years, resulting in a detailed chronicle of human history, culture, and global connections. "The Silk Road" visually demonstrates the lasting impact of these ancient trade routes on our modern interconnected world.
