The Inventor (1980)

This World War I drama tells the story of Jakob (Bruno Ganz), an exceptionally inventive but socially isolated man living in a Swiss village. Despite his talent and dedication, Jakob is considered an oddity by his community. With the help of his friend Otti (Walo Lüönd), Jakob overcomes obstacles to create a groundbreaking carriage design that uses a tread system instead of wheels. Unknowingly, his invention closely resembles a new military tank. This discovery devastates Jakob, leading to the collapse of his career and his forced institutionalization. The film examines themes of social alienation, the consequences of obsession, and the strength of the human spirit when confronted with hardship.
