Lou Parker values intellectual pursuits and the life she builds with her husband, Ray. While their neighbors enjoy television, Lou and Ray prefer the library and reading *The Observer*. This difference is important to them; it defines their pursuit of culture and knowledge, setting them apart from others. But as they become more involved with the people around them, Lou and Ray will find that clear lines between people are not always so clear.
