Description:
In March 1978, the Queensland government announced its intention to take control of the Aurukun Aboriginal Reserve from the Uniting Church, causing anger among the community. The Aboriginal people believed the church understood and supported their goals better than the government. They feared the state's real reason was financial, due to valuable bauxite deposits under the reserve. The federal government agreed with the Aboriginal community. Over the next three weeks, tensions grew across Australia as both sides prepared for a conflict over Aurukun's future and its people.
