Speak White (1980)

"Speak White" is a powerful French poem by Michèle Lalonde, written in 1968, that addresses the difficulties faced by French speakers in Quebec. Published in 1974, it became a central message for those working to protect and promote the French language in the face of English dominance. In 1980, filmmakers Pierre Falardeau and Julien Poulin adapted Lalonde's poem into a moving six-minute short film, performed by actress Marie Eykel. Released by the National Film Board of Canada, this film is an artistic and political piece that remains relevant today.
