Description:

Set in 18th Century Italy, "Rappaccini's Daughter" tells the story of scholar Giovanni and the mysterious Beatrice, who lives in a garden filled with poisonous plants tended by her father, Dr. Rappaccini. Beatrice's beauty hides a deadly curse, and Giovanni discovers that this curse cannot be escaped. Dr. Rappaccini experimented on his daughter, linking her life to the garden’s toxic plants. As Giovanni and Beatrice fall in love, her poisonous nature begins to affect him, leading him to try to free her from her father and protect himself. Tragically, his efforts result in Beatrice's death. Nathaniel Hawthorne's themes of interfering with others and the dangers of manipulating nature are explored in this dramatic period piece. The film examines love, ambition, and sacrifice against a backdrop of scientific advancement and obsession. Giovanni learns that some things should be left alone, and that tampering with nature has terrible consequences, forcing him to face the results of his actions.
