Priest Daens (1992)

In late 19th-century Aalst, Father Adolf Daens, a dedicated priest, confronts widespread suffering in the town's textile industry: child labor, dangerous working conditions, and unfair voting practices. His articles in the local Catholic newspaper ignite hope among workers but anger the powerful. Expelled from the Catholic Church, Father Daens founds the Christian Democrats and becomes a Member of Parliament. Torn between his faith and his new role as advocate for the working class, he faces opposition from Rome. The film also follows stories of love and hardship: a woman battles for her relationship with a socialist while enduring abuse from her employer; children die in preventable accidents at work; and church leaders indulge in self-serving activities. This moving drama examines social change, religious division, and personal cost against a historical setting.
