Description:
Kavery Kaul’s documentary explores the history of calypso and soca music, tracing their cultural origins in Trinidad and Tobago. These genres, blending African and East Indian traditions, gained international popularity in the 1950s thanks to Harry Belafonte. The film examines how calypso and soca continued to flourish in the 1980s with independent distribution networks serving expatriate communities. Restored by the Academy Film Archive and the Women's Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film & Television, the film had its North American premiere at the MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation in January 2023.
