Diego, The Forbidden Island (2002)

This documentary recounts the story of the Chagossians, who were displaced from their islands in the northern Indian Ocean. In 1965, the British colonial authorities designated the islands as separate from Mauritius as part of Mauritius's independence agreement. Subsequently, the United States leased Diego Garcia, the largest island, for a military base, leading to the relocation of the Chagossian population to Mauritius. For the last 36 years, the Chagossians have faced significant poverty in Mauritius, while holding onto the hope of returning to their homeland.
