Description:
Varick Frissell's 1931 film, originally titled *White Thunder*, was inspired by his affection for the Canadian Arctic. Filmed in black-and-white in Newfoundland, it tells the story of a competitive relationship between two seal hunters during a hunt on the ice. Dissatisfied with the initial version, Frissell sent the film crew on a real Newfoundland seal hunt aboard the SS Viking. A dynamite explosion during the hunt killed many crew members, including Frissell himself, and the film was renamed in their memory.
