Devil on the Roof (2001)

Renowned Iranian photographer Nasrollah Kasraian and anthropologist Ziba Arshi have extensively documented Iran's diverse communities. This film offers a compelling glimpse into the lives of Iran's Turkmans, who reside in villages northeast of Tehran, close to the Afghan border. Over several years, the filmmakers observe transformations in Turkman society. *Devil on the Roof* explores various facets of their traditional culture, including shamanistic healing practices using music, sticks, and swords to address physical and mental ailments. It also portrays the roles of women – as mothers, rice field workers, and weavers of intricate rugs and clothing. Returning to the Turkman villages four years after the initial filming, the filmmakers discover significant and unexpected changes.
