Description:
In 1897, actor and theatre leader Kawakami Otojiro embarked on a U.S. tour with his wife and company. Facing language barriers and numerous setbacks – including financial losses and actors' strikes – Otojiro perseveres. Arriving in Boston, he witnesses a packed performance of "The Merchant of Venice" by Henry Irving. Inspired, Otojiro and his company create a Japanese adaptation of the play in a single night and perform it for a foreign audience, using improvised dialogue and a spontaneous style, punctuated by "Sucharaka poko poko" when they encounter unfamiliar words.
