The Spanish Main (1945)

Laurent van Horn leads a group of Dutch refugees on a ship headed for freedom in the Carolinas. However, their journey is cut short when the ship is wrecked off the coast of Cartagena, a Spanish territory ruled by Don Juan Alvardo. After being imprisoned, Laurent escapes and, five years later, becomes a pirate leader. He disguises himself as the navigator on a ship carrying Contessa Francesca, the daughter of a Mexican noble, who is traveling to marry Alvarado – a man she has never met. Laurent's pirates seize the ship and Francesca. To save another vessel, Francesca offers her hand in marriage to Laurent, and he takes her to his pirate hideout. This angers his fellow pirates, Anne Bonney and Captain Benjamin Black, who overthrow him and hand Francesca over to Alvarado. Subsequently, Mario du Billar, Laurent’s trusted lieutenant, makes a deal to deliver Laurent to Alvarado.
