Description:
In April 1951, after driving the South Korean army back, the Chinese People Volunteer Army advanced towards Australian and Canadian troops establishing defensive lines 39 kilometers behind. Here, soldiers fought one-on-one, often in darkness, in a battle between a superpower and forces from around the world. The fight was for a valley, a key route to Seoul. If the valley fell, the southern capital and the war would be lost. Though the UN troops had the advantage of higher ground and artillery, the Chinese relied on overwhelming numbers. This resulted in a brutal, close-quarters battle for the young men on both sides. The Battle of Kapyong became a critical turning point in China's spring offensive in Korea.
