The Wood and the Calabash (2002)

In northern Côte d'Ivoire, the balafon – a xylophone with calabash resonators – is a central part of Senufo culture. Balafon makers are musicians, but not all players are makers. This film closely documents the creation of this vital instrument for the Senufo people. It follows every stage, from the maker’s initial prayer to the balafon spirits before the tree is felled, through the crafting and tuning of the keys and resonators, and finally to attaching the membranes that give the instrument its unique sound. Balafon maker Nanga discusses his work and shares insights with friends over a meal.
