Description:
In northern Côte d'Ivoire, the balafon – a xylophone with calabash resonators – is a central part of Senufo culture. This film documents balafon orchestras performing in five villages during the two main days of funeral celebrations, which are the most significant rites, ceremonies, and joyful moments in a Senufo life. Through conversations with Sikaman, a young musician who assisted with the film, master balafonist Nahoua reveals the origins and meaning of this remarkable music.
