Description:

The steamer "Liemba" is likely the oldest regularly operating liner in the world. Originally named after German Africa explorer Graf von Goetzen and commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1913 to support German troops in Africa, the ship traveled from Germany to Lake Tanganyika in 5,000 crates, transported by ship, rail, and foot. There, German engineers assembled the vessel, receiving a special payment for the tropical conditions. During World War I, the "Graf Goetzen" even served as a gunboat. The film recounts the eventful, and sometimes humorous, story of this historic ship through the eyes of those whose lives have been connected to it: Germans, Belgians, Britons, and Tanzanians. It's a glimpse into colonial history and recent Tanzanian life, with elements reminiscent of "Fitzcarraldo."
