Description:
This is a fiercely patriotic story of India's fight for independence, told through the story of a Bengali family from 1885, when the Indian National Congress was founded, to 1947. Key moments in the struggle, including Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance (1920), the Simon Commission controversy (1928), Vallabhbhai Patel's Bardoli campaign (1928), and the 1942 Quit India movement, are woven into the narrative. The film’s style of acting, choreography, and script draws heavily from the IPTA theatre movement of the 1940s. Produced by Bombay Talkies and distributors of the Chicago Radio PA systems, the quasi-documentary stars Kishore Kumar as a passionate hero. The film incorporates archival footage from Kohinoor and Krishna Film, including a rare shot of Rabindranath Tagore singing "Jana Gana Mana," India’s national anthem, filmed during his visit to Munich.
