Description:
In late 2005, France was gripped by widespread rioting in its suburbs. Young people from these areas, many still in school, nightly set fire to trash cans, cars, and schools. The unrest led to a state of emergency, the first in France since the Algerian War of Independence. The government pledged support for neglected neighborhoods, but one year later, little has changed for the residents. Has the community recovered? Have officials delivered on their promises? Alice Diop, a native of a nearby suburb, explores the situation in and around Clichy, where the riots began after two young men died fleeing police at an electrical substation.
