Description:
The past lives on in the stories of Africatown residents in Mobile, Alabama, who have passed down tales of their origins for generations. Their community was created by enslaved people brought to America in 1860 on the Clotilda, the last known illegal slave ship. Although the ship was destroyed upon arrival, its memory endured. The recent discovery of the Clotilda’s remains now gives the community a concrete connection to their ancestors and confirms a history that was long suppressed.
