Description:

Young composer Mikhail Glinka presents his new work at a gathering hosted by Count Vielgorsky. The audience, used to Western music, responds with indifference to his creation, deeply upsetting him. He then travels to Italy to further his musical studies. Upon his return, he's determined to write a national Russian opera. Vasily Zhukovsky suggests the story of Ivan Susanin. Tsar Nicholas I changes the opera's title to "A Life for the Tsar" and assigns Baron Rosen as librettist. Glinka is taken aback by Rosen's German-tinged Russian. The premiere is a success, but Glinka remains dissatisfied with the libretto, criticizing it as containing inaccuracies. When Nicholas I discovers that "Ruslan and Lyudmila" is based on a poem by Pushkin, he views it as rebellious. This disheartening experience strengthens Glinka's resolve among his supporters.
