Aloha (2016)

*Aloha* is a film by Ottinger, inspired by the mythical story *Tabu*, which was filmed in Tahiti. The film is a tribute to Murnau, Gauguin, Matisse, and other artists who were drawn to different cultures. By combining footage from *Tabu* with scenes from her own films, Ottinger creates a conversation between these fictional worlds across time and place. A fish caught by islanders in 1931 appears in the film, being eaten by pirates in *Madame X* forty years later. The movie explores the idea of artistic influence and how one generation builds upon the work of the last.
