In January 1978, Merle Haggard performed at the Austin City Limits for the first time, at the height of his career. Over a decade had passed since his first national hit, "Sing A Sad Song," and "Okie From Muskogee" had recently cemented his place in popular culture. He had already received Entertainer of the Year awards from both the Country Music Awards and the Academy of Country Music in 1970. He had just released "A Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World (Or MY Salute to Bob Willis)," which revitalized interest in western swing.
