Does gender define a person's entire life? Is being a man inherently tied to violence and control? In 2017, British artist Martin Firrell created a public art project commemorating the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexual men in England and Wales under the 1967 Sexual Offences Act. Simultaneously, Firrell advocated for the end of gender labels, discussing with business leaders, activists, and academics how gender is portrayed to employees and customers. The project culminated in a nationwide display of historical quotes on digital billboards in public areas, directly addressing the central issues of the debate.
