Builders, Housewives and the Construction of Modern Athens (2021)

This documentary explores the polykatoikía, a uniquely Athenian building type, and the rebuilding of the city through the eyes of the everyday workers who built them. It examines the lives of provincial laborers who migrated to Athens with their families after the Civil War and fundamentally shaped the city's landscape. The film investigates how they replaced neoclassical structures with apartment buildings, and how they learned and refined their skills while interacting with architects. Ultimately, it tells the story of their experience with modernity, drawing from Ioanna Theocharopoulou’s book of the same name, revised and published by the Onassis Foundation in 2021.
