Description:
In a time of oppression, how does art endure? Under Soviet rule, artists who refuse to conform face execution, imprisonment, or mental institutions. Inspired by their fate, young Igor Savitsky secretly rescues 40,000 works by forbidden artists, establishing a hidden museum in the Uzbek desert, shielded from the KGB. Despite being penniless himself, he cleverly obtains funds from the authorities who are suppressing the art. Savitsky gathers a diverse collection of Russian Avant-Garde art, but his most significant find is a previously unknown group of artists who settled in Uzbekistan after the 1917 revolution. Influenced by the region's unique Islamic culture, they developed a strikingly original style – a fusion of European modernism and ancient Eastern traditions.
