I Have Lost Touch With the World (2004)

This film explores Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, his final completed work. It documents Riccardo Chailly's rehearsals with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, showing both performances and Chailly's conducting and commentary. The film includes insights from Henry-Louis de la Grange, Mahler's leading biographer, and Chailly himself, discussing each of the symphony’s four movements. It features excerpts from other Mahler works, notably a full performance of the 'Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde' with baritone Thomas Hampson. A ten-minute uninterrupted performance of the fourth movement is included, captured during a dress rehearsal with an audience. The film also touches on Chailly’s upcoming departure from the orchestra after sixteen years, a position since taken over by Mariss Jansons.
