This 16mm excerpt from the Shaft movie trailer distorts the original. Slowed audio, muffled gunfire, and Isaac Hayes' music become unsettlingly monstrous. Fragmented images – glimpses of faces, urban scenes, and text – are presented in cyan negative, creating a psycho-dramatic abstraction far more disturbing than the film's original depiction of a gangster-dominated world. The piece demonstrates how altering the visual framing can fundamentally change existing material.
