Description:
This biographical film follows the life and artistic challenges of French composer Hector Berlioz. It depicts him as a defiant medical student yearning to be a composer, attending a performance at the Paris Opera conducted by Habeneck, dining with young artists like Hugo, Janin, Dumas, Mérimée, and Delacroix, and pursuing his future wife Harriet Smithson after a performance of Hamlet. The film also portrays his life in a garret while ill with a throat abscess, a visit from his mother who curses him, and the creation of the Symphonie fantastique. Later, it shows his marital difficulties, the premiere of his opera Benvenuto Cellini, his travels across Europe, his second marriage to Marie Recio (known as "Marie Martin"), gaining public recognition in his later years, and reconciling with his son.
