Description:
Monkey on My Back tells the true story of welterweight boxing champion Barney Ross. Cameron Mitchell plays Ross, whose promising boxing career is derailed when he enlists in the Marines at the start of World War II. After becoming a decorated hero overseas, Ross contracts malaria and is given morphine for pain relief. Returning home, he becomes addicted to drugs. The film vividly portrays his struggle with addiction as he tries to regain his boxing career, a depiction so intense it nearly resulted in a Production Code denial. Although Barney Ross himself was a technical advisor on the film, he later sued the producers for defamation, a lawsuit he ultimately lost.
