In 2017, 24-year-old Petter attempts suicide but is stopped by the police. His friend and film school classmate, Sverre, wants to help him by making a film to keep him engaged and focused on recovery. They travel Oslo, documenting the lives of others struggling with difficult issues. Their approach is often impulsive, leading them into unexpected and intense situations. They encounter Monica, who copes with past trauma through self-harm; Oliver and Cornelia, battling addiction; and Emma, a transsexual woman embracing her identity. Petter also meets Miriam, who becomes his girlfriend. Through these encounters, Petter confronts his own destructive tendencies and begins a challenging path toward healing and hope. *Young and Afraid* is a direct and honest documentary about the decision to live.
