Description:

Growing up in Memphis, Will Handy is raised by his preacher father and Aunt Hagar. His father wants him to limit his musical talents to church, but Will is drawn to the music of everyday life. After composing a theme song for a local singer named Gogo, he agrees to be her accompanist. This decision strains his relationship with his father for years as Will writes and releases numerous blues songs. Eventually, the family is reunited when Gogo takes them to New York to witness Will's music performed by a symphony orchestra.
