In 1946, Black army sergeant Isaac Woodard was assaulted by a police chief in South Carolina after a dispute on a bus, leaving him permanently blind. The brutal attack gained national attention, and the acquittal of the police chief by an all-white jury sparked outrage and fundamentally altered American history. Based on Richard Gergel’s book *Unexampled Courage*, the film shows how this crime spurred President Harry Truman to desegregate federal offices and the military. The event also paved the way for the Supreme Court’s 1954 *Brown v. Board of Education* ruling, which outlawed segregation in schools and ignited the modern civil rights movement.
