Description:
In 1913 Vienna, a young woman from the vaudeville world is about to marry a draftsperson who is being sent to the military. To prevent her from returning to the stage, he sends her to the countryside. However, she ends up in a love affair with an officer and, overwhelmed by confusion, takes her own life. The original ending of this close-to-the-camera melodrama was poorly received. A more hopeful ending, featuring the rescue of the protagonist, was added later. This version presents a bittersweet melodrama, benefiting from strong performances and excellent cinematography. The version available on rental copies includes both endings.
