Balordi (2005)

Nestled in the Tuscan countryside, a highly secure Italian prison becomes the unlikely setting for a production of Bertolt Brecht's "Threepenny Opera," performed entirely by the inmates. These physically imposing men reveal a playful side as they inhabit the roles, creating a contrast with the harsh reality of prison life. Initially, the film seems to present two separate stories: one depicting prison existence and another showcasing the actors in colorful costumes. However, these worlds begin to merge as we learn about the prisoners' pasts – a childhood in Palermo's slums, dreams of joining the Mafia, or aspirations of becoming a doctor. United by their shared circumstances, these former street kids find common ground through their performance. When Nicola, serving a murder sentence, embodies Mackie Messer, he reimagines Brecht's play and, in doing so, rediscovers himself.
