Description:
In 1866, a young man from Moscow named Alexei Ivanovitch takes a job in Baden Baden, Austria's gambling center, working for General Zagorianski to care for his children. Alexei soon learns the General is a gambling addict on the verge of financial ruin. The General’s only funds come from Marquis de Grieux, an adventurer planning to marry Zagorianski’s sister, Pauline, hoping to gain a large inheritance from the ailing General’s Aunt Antonina. Disgusted by the society's obsession with wealth, Alexei falls in love with Pauline and wants to move her away. When she rejects him, he starts gambling at the casino.
