Description:
In 1939, José Garcés is a prisoner in a French camp after the Spanish Republicans' defeat. To uplift his fellow inmates, he recounts his journey to adulthood in 1919 – the year he understood that living and dying are one. His strict father loses his wealth in German bonds and moves to Caspe, leaving José to finish school in Zaragoza while working an apprenticeship at a pharmacy. He maintains a courtship with Valentina through letters, has a relationship with Isabel, a maid who shares his views on free love, and is influenced by El Checa, a kind anarchist teacher who leads a failed uprising.
